By tradition — and the house says by tradition — around 1670 a pilgrim named Baba Budan carried seven coffee seeds out of Mokha and planted them in the hills of southern India that still carry his name. What is documented is that Indian coffee was established by the late 1600s, that the Dutch took plants from there to Java, and that from one Java plant in Amsterdam in 1706 came the line that crossed the Atlantic. Now read the notes: Caramelised dates, the same words printed on the second card. Three and a half centuries, eleven thousand kilometres, and it came home tasting like where it started.
